External Data Portals

Data portals are websites which compile links of data-specific sites. These sites do not typically include raw datasets; rather they serve as a gateway to data sites.

From 1612. Provides interactive map of data for Africa. Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA), Harvard University.

Animated Atlas of African History 
From 1879-2002. Data includes: territory names, boundaries, imperial rulers, political systems, violent conflicts, economic and demographic trends Brown University

Asian Historical Statistics Project
Provides economic data on select Asian countries. Certain Data are only available in Japanese. Institute of Economic Research Hitotsubashi University.

Belgian Federal Science Policy Office

British India population, migration, and trade

CAIT (Climate Analysis Indicators Tool)
An environmental analytical tool (registration required). Contains a data archive of environmental datasets. Various years.

China Historical GIS Project (CHGIS)
From 222 BCE to 1911. A spatial database including Chinese administrative hierarchy from the regime capital to the county level. Some data are only available in Chinese. Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA), Harvard University.

China in Time and Space (CITAS)
Contemporary Data from 1982 to 1990. A project to create and maintain databases of spatially- and temporally-referenced data on China. University of Washington.

Contemporary and historical migration data

Council of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA)
A data portal to 20 European data archives as well as a host of a large number of social science datasets.

DANS - A large social science database on data ranging from migration to health sciences
Registration is required and contribution is encouraged. DANS (Data Archiving and Network Services) is an institute of Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences AND Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.

European economic, demographic, and environmental statistics
From 1980. UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe).

Finland’s socioeconomic database
From 1975. Finland national government.

German Historical Geographical Information System (HGIS Germany)
From 1820 to 1914. A GIS database contains all boundary changes in Germany from the state to the governmental district levels on a yearly basis. Institute of European History and University of Applied Sciences, Mainz, Germany

Great Britain social science database

Great Britain socioeconomic and census data

Great Britain’s Victorian Census Project
Includes 1831 census data. Click on “The 1831 Census” to download excel file. Staffordshire University.

Global Economic History Datasets 
Early economies and human capital data from 1500. A site hosted by the Centre of Global Economic History from the Social and Economic History Department at Utrecht University.

History On-Line Project
University of London’s Institute of Historical Research provides links to other database sites.

Human capital and historical data 
Links to data dating back from the 16th century. A site maintained by Dr. Bas van Leeuwen, Warwick University.

Contemporary datasets (free and for sale) of various topics, mainly focusing on marketing. There are some historical data however (search: “history” or “historical”). InfoChimps, Inc.

Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS)
Harvard University’s collection of quantitative social science databases, powered by the Dataverse Network Project.

Institute of European History Map Server (IEG-Maps)

Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) - USA
From 1850. A project dedicated to collecting and distributing census data; this is the United States branch. Minnesota Population Center.

Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS)-International
From 1960s. A project dedicated to collecting and distributing census data; this is the international branch. Minnesota Population Center.

International Federation of Data Organizations for the Social Science Provides list of other data sites.

International Opium Commission Report, Shanghai 1909
From 1909 and earlier. Detailed report containing testimony and trade statistics from member nations of the International Opium Commission. For a data table of contents, see our archives.

INTUTE: Social Sciences
A consortium of seven universities in the UK, which provide links to social science data sites. Search “historical” for a list of data sites to which INTUTE links. The website has been shut down (July 2011) but select archived data are still available.

Keeping Track
A site maintained by University of Essex’s Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) and the UK’s Office of National Statistics (ONS). The site serves as a guide to longitudinal sources of data and describes how one can obtain data from a particular site.
